Hrvatsko Zagorje is the hilly region north of Zagreb, between the capital and the Slovenian border. Vineyards, small villages and hilltop churches cover its green slopes.
Why visit
The region is known for its castles, above all Trakošćan by a lake and Veliki Tabor on a hilltop. Krapina’s Neanderthal museum, the open-air village museum in Kumrovec and the pilgrimage church of Marija Bistrica are easy to combine.
Thermal spas such as Stubičke and Tuheljske Toplice and local food – štrukli, turkey with mlinci – make it a relaxed weekend from Zagreb.
Where to stay
Spa hotels, wine estates and rural guesthouses spread across the region.
Getting there and around
Most of the region is 30–60 minutes from Zagreb by car. Public transport is limited, so a car is best.
Parking
Free or cheap parking at most sights; castles have their own car parks.
