Plan Your Trip

When to go, where to stay, how long, how to get there and how to get around.

Everything to decide before you go: when to travel, where to base yourself, how long to stay and how to get around. Start with the section you need – each one links to detailed guides.

When to visit

July and August are the hottest and busiest months on the coast. June and September usually offer warm sea, long days and fewer crowds; spring and autumn suit walking, cycling, food and inland trips. Many island services run less often outside the main season.

Where to go

Coast or inland, mainland or islands: each region has its own rhythm. Compare them on the destinations page.

How long to stay

  • Weekend: one town and its surroundings – e.g. Rovinj or Zagreb.
  • 3–4 days: one region, such as Istria or the Split area.
  • One week: two bases, for example Split and one island.
  • Two weeks: a coastal route, e.g. Istria → Kvarner → Dalmatia.

Getting to Croatia

International airports include Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar, Pula, Rijeka and Osijek. Many visitors drive from neighbouring countries; long-distance buses and seasonal ferries from Italy are other options.

Getting around

A car gives the most freedom on the mainland; buses connect most towns; car ferries and catamarans serve the islands. Taxis, transfers and bikes cover the rest.

Where to stay

Hotel, apartment, villa, campsite or holiday home? Compare the options in our where to stay guide.

Budget & costs

Croatia uses the euro. Prices are highest in July and August and in the most popular coastal towns; eating in konobas away from the seafront and travelling in June or September helps.

Driving in Croatia

Motorways are tolled; old towns on the coast are often closed to cars, so plan to use public car parks.

Family travel

Shallow pebble beaches, shade, short transfers and family-friendly accommodation make the biggest difference with children. Our family guides point out what works for which ages.

Pet-friendly travel

Many campsites, apartments and some beaches accept dogs – rules differ by town and season, so check before you book.

Practical information

Money, mobile data, opening hours, emergency numbers and local etiquette – the small things that make a trip easier.
