Main highlights

Town beach, Biokovo Skywalk, harbour promenade

Makarska is the main town of the Makarska Riviera, the strip of pebble beaches between Split and Dubrovnik. The bare limestone wall of Biokovo mountain rises straight behind it, so you can swim in the morning and stand 1,000 metres above the sea in the afternoon.

Why visit

The town beach runs for more than a kilometre from the harbour, lined with pine trees and cafés, and the old stone houses around Kačić Square stay busy until late in summer. It suits families and travellers who want an easy beach base with restaurants within walking distance.

Biokovo Nature Park is the big extra: the panoramic road climbs to the Skywalk glass platform and towards Sveti Jure, one of the highest peaks in Croatia. Brač is a short ferry ride away, and the smaller riviera villages of Brela, Tučepi and Podgora are a few minutes along the coast.

Where to stay

Stay near the harbour or the town beach to walk everywhere. Apartments higher up the hill are quieter and cheaper but mean a steep walk back. Tučepi and Brela are calmer alternatives for families.

Getting there and around

Makarska is about an hour by car from Split Airport along the coastal road or the motorway. Intercity buses stop at the bus station just above the old town, and a car ferry links Makarska with Sumartin on Brač.

Parking

Street parking is paid in summer and the centre gets very busy in July and August. Book accommodation with a parking space, or arrive early and leave the car for the day.
