Hvar Town is the main town of the island of Hvar, built around a deep harbour on the south-west coast. Its Renaissance square, Venetian palaces and lively nightlife make it one of the most visited places in Dalmatia.
Why visit
St Stephen’s Square, one of the largest squares in Dalmatia, runs from the cathedral to the harbour. Above the town, the Fortica fortress gives a view over the rooftops and the Pakleni islands, and the Arsenal houses one of the oldest public theatres in Europe.
Taxi boats leave the harbour for the beaches and restaurants of the Pakleni islands, and the town is busy until late in July and August.
Where to stay
The centre is lively and can be noisy at night; families may prefer the bays on either side of town or Stari Grad and Jelsa.
Getting there and around
Catamarans from Split arrive right in the harbour in about an hour. Car ferries from Split go to Stari Grad, a 20-minute drive away.
Parking
Cars cannot enter the centre. Use the paid car park at the entrance to town.
