Jelsa is a small harbour town on the north coast of Hvar, roughly halfway along the island. Its harbour and square are framed by pine woods, with beaches within walking distance and vineyards and stone villages behind the town.
Why visit
Jelsa is calmer than Hvar Town but lively enough in summer, with cafés and restaurants around the harbour. Paths lead along the coast to pebble beaches, and Vrboska is a short walk or drive away.
Inland villages such as Pitve and Vrisnik make good short walks or drives, and a narrow tunnel road leads through the hills to the beaches of the south coast at Zavala.
Where to stay
Stay in town for restaurants and the harbour, or in the bays around Jelsa for a quieter holiday.
Getting there and around
Take the car ferry from Split to Stari Grad, then drive about 20 minutes. In season, a catamaran links Jelsa with Bol on Brač and with Split.
Parking
Parking near the harbour is paid and busy in summer.
