Main highlights

Waterfalls, watermills, wooden footbridges

Rastoke is the old mill village of Slunj, built where the Slunjčica river spills over a series of small waterfalls into the Korana. Wooden houses and watermills sit right on the cascades, which is why it is often called a small Plitvice.

Why go

Paths and wooden footbridges lead between the waterfalls, pools and restored mills, some of which still grind grain. It is a short, easy visit – an hour or two is enough – and makes a natural stop on the way to or from Plitvice Lakes.

The village is prettiest in spring, when the water is high, and in the green of early summer. Local restaurants serve trout and other dishes from the rivers.

Getting there and around

Rastoke is on the edge of Slunj, about half an hour by car north of Plitvice Lakes on the main road towards Karlovac and Zagreb. Parts of the village are a private open-air museum with an entrance fee in season; parking is nearby.
