Ugljan is a long, green island directly opposite Zadar, covered in olive groves and lined with small fishing villages. A frequent car ferry makes it one of the easiest islands to visit from the mainland.
Why visit
Preko, where the ferry arrives, faces the tiny islet of Galovac with its Franciscan monastery. Above the village, the ruins of St Michael’s fortress give one of the best views over Zadar and the islands. Kali is still a working fishing village, and Kukljica has some of the island’s best beaches.
At its southern end, a bridge at Ždrelac connects Ugljan with Pašman, so you can explore both islands in one trip.
Where to stay
Preko is the most practical base, close to the ferry; Kukljica and Ugljan village are quieter and better for beaches.
Getting there and around
Car ferries run from Zadar to Preko throughout the day; the crossing takes about 25 minutes. A car or bike is the best way to get around the island.
Parking
Parking is easy in most villages outside July and August.
