Main highlights

Korčula town, Lumbarda wine, island beaches

Korčula is a long, wooded island in southern Dalmatia, close to the Pelješac peninsula. Its main town is a small walled peninsula of stone streets laid out in a herringbone pattern, often compared to a smaller Dubrovnik.

Why visit

Walk the old town, climb the cathedral bell tower and watch the sunset from the old walls. Korčula claims to be the birthplace of Marco Polo, and the summer sword dance, the Moreška, is one of its oldest traditions.

Beyond the town, Lumbarda is known for Grk white wine and sandy coves, and the villages inland produce Pošip. The island suits slow travel: swimming, wine tasting and short boat trips to the small islands opposite the town.

Where to stay

Stay in or near Korčula town for restaurants and ferries, or in Lumbarda for beaches and wineries. Vela Luka on the west end is quieter.

Getting there and around

The quickest car route is the short ferry from Orebić on Pelješac. Passenger catamarans connect Korčula with Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik in season.

Parking

Korčula old town is car-free. Park outside the walls; spaces near the centre are paid and scarce in summer.
