Osijek is the largest city in Slavonia, in eastern Croatia, on the right bank of the Drava river. Its baroque fortress quarter, Tvrđa, is one of the best-preserved in the country.

Why visit

Tvrđa’s squares, churches and cafés make a relaxed evening, and the riverside promenade runs for kilometres along the Drava. The neo-Gothic co-cathedral of St Peter and Paul dominates the centre.

Osijek is the base for Kopački Rit Nature Park, the Baranja wine villages and day trips to Đakovo and Vukovar.

Where to stay

Stay in or near Tvrđa or the centre to walk to restaurants and the river.

Getting there and around

Osijek has a small airport and train and bus connections with Zagreb, about three hours by car.
