A broad park path runs between leafy trees, benches and traditional lampposts, with a few people walking in the distance.

Croatia’s largest zoo, set among the lakes and woods of Maksimir Park in eastern Zagreb.

April–October

Ideal trip length

Half a day

Main highlights

Maksimir Park setting, big cats, feeding times

Zagreb Zoo lies inside Maksimir Park, the city’s oldest public park, in the east of Zagreb. Opened in 1925, it is the largest zoo in Croatia and an easy half-day out, especially with children.

Why go

The zoo is spread around ponds and woodland, so a visit feels like a walk in the park as much as a zoo trip. There are big cats, primates, birds and reptiles, and feeding times through the day are popular with families.

Combine it with a walk through the rest of Maksimir Park, with its lakes, old oak forest and paths that are busy with locals at weekends.

Getting there and around

Trams run from the city centre to the Maksimir stop by the main park gate. From there it is a pleasant walk through the park to the zoo entrance.
