Krk Town is the main town of the island of Krk, a compact walled centre on the south-west coast that grew from the Roman settlement of Curicum. Its harbour, narrow stone streets and seafront promenade make it the island’s busiest base.
Why visit
Inside the walls, the Cathedral of the Assumption and the Frankopan castle on Kamplin square recall the princes who ruled Krk for centuries. Small squares, wine bars and konobas fill the lanes, and the harbour promenade is lively on summer evenings.
Pebble beaches and coves lie on both sides of town, and Baška, Vrbnik and Punat are all within a short drive.
Where to stay
The old town and the harbour are best for walking to restaurants. Apartments and campsites around the bay are quieter and closer to the beaches.
Getting there and around
Krk is joined to the mainland by the Krk Bridge, and Rijeka Airport is on the island near Omišalj, about 25 km away. Buses run from Rijeka and Zagreb.
Parking
The old town is pedestrian. Paid car parks are just outside the walls and fill up in July and August.
