Baška is a beach town at the southern end of the island of Krk, at the head of a wide bay framed by bare hills. Its long pebble beach, Vela plaža, is one of the best known in Kvarner.
Why visit
Besides the beach, Baška is the home of the Baška tablet, one of the oldest texts written in Croatian in the Glagolitic script; a copy can be seen in the church of St Lucy in nearby Jurandvor. Marked trails lead over the hills to small coves and views of the Velebit coast.
It suits families and active travellers: swimming in the morning, hiking or kayaking later, and dinner on the promenade.
Where to stay
Stay close to Vela plaža for a beach holiday, or higher up for quieter streets and views.
Getting there and around
Krk is linked to the mainland by a bridge, and Rijeka Airport is on the island itself. Buses connect Baška with Krk town and Rijeka.
Parking
Parking near the beach is paid and fills up in summer; many apartments include a space.
