Stara Baška is a small village on the south-west coast of Krk, strung out for about 2 km along a bare, rocky shore. Its stark karst landscape, clear water and wild coves feel very different from the green north of the island.
Why visit
A single narrow road runs through the village and ends at a small harbour with a few restaurants. Many of the best beaches are coves you walk down to before the village – pebble, rock and occasionally sand – with views across the sea to Cres and Rab.
Golden Bay, the sandy cove under high cliffs, is about 4 km along the coast and reachable only by boat. Wilder bays such as Oprna and Zala Draga are nearby; bring swimming shoes for the sea urchins.
Where to stay
There are no hotels – only holiday homes, apartments and a campsite at the entrance to the village. It suits travellers who want quiet and nature rather than restaurants and nightlife.
Getting there and around
Stara Baška belongs to Punat. The road from Punat climbs over the hills and is narrow and winding in places, so drive carefully, especially in summer traffic.
Parking
Parking is limited along the narrow village road and near the beaches. Arrive early in July and August.
