Omiš sits where the Cetina River breaks out of a deep canyon into the Adriatic, about half an hour south-east of Split. Grey cliffs rise right above the rooftops, and the town was once home to pirates who controlled this part of the coast.
Why visit
Climb to the Fortica (Starigrad) fortress for the view over the river mouth and the islands, or to the smaller Mirabela tower in the old town. The narrow streets below are full of small restaurants and the town beach is right at the river mouth.
Omiš is best known for adventure: rafting and kayaking on the Cetina, canyoning in the gorge and zip lines across the canyon. It is a good stop for active travellers and families who want more than a beach.
Where to stay
The old town and the streets near the beach put everything within walking distance. For more space, look at the villages along the coast towards Makarska.
Getting there and around
Omiš is on the coastal road between Split and Makarska, with frequent buses in both directions. Activity companies usually pick you up in town.
Parking
Parking near the river and the beach is paid and limited in summer. Ask your accommodation about a parking space.
