Sumartin is a small harbour village on the eastern tip of Brač, facing the Makarska Riviera and the Biokovo mountain. Car ferries from Makarska arrive here, which makes it the gateway to Brač for anyone coming from the south.
Why visit
Sumartin grew up in the 17th century around its Franciscan monastery, when families from the mainland settled here to escape the Ottoman wars. The monastery still overlooks the harbour.
Today it is one of the quietest places on the island, with pebble coves, a few konobas and wide views across the channel to Biokovo.
Where to stay
Small apartments around the harbour suit a quiet stay. For more restaurants and beaches, Bol is the nearest larger resort.
Getting there and around
The car ferry from Makarska to Sumartin takes about an hour, with fewer departures outside summer. From Sumartin, the road continues across the island towards Selca, Bol and Supetar.
Parking
Parking is easy, except when ferry traffic queues along the harbour in summer.
