Main highlights

Vis town, Komiža, Stiniva cove, Biševo Blue Cave

Vis is the most distant inhabited island in central Dalmatia, around two and a half hours by car ferry from Split. Closed to foreign visitors for decades as a military base, it kept a slower, less developed character than the islands closer to the coast.

Why visit

The island has two towns: Vis, on a deep bay with Roman and Venetian history, and the fishing town of Komiža on the west coast. Between them are vineyards, abandoned military tunnels and coves such as Stiniva, reached on foot or by boat.

From Komiža, boats leave for the Blue Cave on Biševo. Vis suits travellers who like good food, local wine (Vugava) and quiet bays more than nightlife.

Where to stay

Vis town has more accommodation and the ferry port; Komiža is smaller and closer to the Blue Cave boats. Both are good bases.

Getting there and around

Car ferries and faster catamarans run from Split to Vis town. Local buses connect Vis and Komiža, but a car, scooter or boat tour helps for the beaches.

Parking

Parking is free or cheap outside the town centres; space near the harbours is limited in August.
